About MA College
Mar Athanasius College (Autonomous), affiliated to M.G. University, Kottayam was established in 1955. The college is owned and managed by Mar Athanasius College Association which was constituted in 1953 under the Cochin Registration of Scientific and Charitable Societies Act. With a total of 13 undergraduate programmes, 2 vocational undergraduate programmes, 17 postgraduate programmes, one integrated postgraduate programme, and 5 doctoral programmes, our educational offerings are designed to provide a rich and varied academic experience.

Department of Biochemistry
The department of Biochemistry was established in the year 2005. The department offers the post-graduate course in Biochemistry (Self-financing). Biochemistry deals with the chemistry of life, about the principles governing the interactions of individual molecules, and how those same principles apply at the scale of cells and living organisms. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad understanding across multiple disciplines in Bioscience during the first year. The courses are offered in collaboration with the Departments of Biotechnology and Microbiology. The second year of the programme deals with more advanced study of Biochemistry.

Biotechnology belongs to the category of applied science which has an impact on various sectors and disciplines that target applying various techniques for the advancement of mankind. This includes tissue culture, genetic engineering, microbial technology, industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and bioinformatics. The Biotechnological department in association with departments of Microbiology and Biochemistry offers extensive research in various fields mainly focused on research in various areas like Immunology, Cancer Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genomics, Infectious diseases, Diabetes, Proteomics etc.

The Department of Chemistry established in 1959 as an undergraduate department is one of the most vibrant departments of M. A College. The department was upgraded to PG department in 1995 and recognized as a Research Centre in 1998.

The department of Microbiology was established in the year 2002. It gives the students knowledge about identification of bacteria, fungi, algae protozoa and virus. The students can gain information about various fields like medical microbiology, aquatic microbiology, agricultural, environmental and soil microbiology, immunology, food microbiology, industrial microbiology etc. The students of the department have secured several university ranks in the past years. The department has bagged 15 ranks in the top three Ranks of M.G University.

The Department of Economics started in the year 1957, is one of the oldest departments of Mar Athanasius College (Autonomous). The Department offers undergraduate, postgraduate programmes and facility for Research in Economics. The B. A. Economics programme was started in 1957 and M. A. Economics was introduced in the decennial year 1965.
Postgraduate Department of M.Com (MARKETING AND INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS)
The Postgraduate Department of Commerce (Self Financing) M. Com International Business was started functioning in the year 2014. Mar Athanasius College is the first institution in Kerala to introduce M. Com International Business under Mahatma Gandhi University. Through this programme, students can develop expertise necessary to understand the global economy. With effect from 2020, the programme name changed to Marketing & International Business as per the need of the hour. The specialisation courses like International Marketing, Retail & Rural Marketing and Logistics & Supply Chain Management apart from Income Taxes, furtherance the students to learn, adopt and convert them with the present scenario. It also facilitates students to build a career in International Business. With this short span our department has one JRF Holder, doing Ph. D at CUSAT, eight NET Holders and copious got placed at reputed Institutions.

Research and Post Graduate Department of Commerce
Established in 1965, the Department of Commerce embarked on a journey that has evolved over the years. In 1981, it ascended to the status of a Postgraduate Department of Commerce, a milestone later upgraded to the Postgraduate and Research Department of Commerce in 2022. Presently, the department proudly offers comprehensive programs including B.Com. Finance and Taxation, M.Com. Finance and Taxation, and a Ph.D. program in the aided stream.
